Poor cut quality using LX-188 with 44' Piranah mulching deck
John Deere Piranha 44 Mower Deck Manual Pdf
Jeff | I'm the second owner of this mower, though its worked well for the 2 previous seasons. However, starting this season it seems to cut poorly (leaving tall blades and generally wanting to lay the grass down rather than cut it cleanly). I sharpened the blades at the beginning of the season (and put them back on the correct direction), and I've been looking around underneath for anything obvious with no luck. The belts seem tight, the blade spindles and idlers spin freely, and the PTO seems to engage/disengage on command. I'd rather not load it up and take it to the local dealer unless necessary, but I'm rapidly running out of ideas and I'm tired of the lawn looking crappy even after mowing. The only other thing I can think of is perhaps the PTO is slipping under load? Is this a normal failure mode for these things? I bought a new battery for it the first season I had it - would this be something to check (guessing that perhaps a low voltage could cause a partial engagement of the PTO)? Other ideas? |
bontai Joe | Have you checked the air pressure in your tires? i know that seems odd, but for a decent cut, the deck should be dead level from side to side and 1/8' to 1/4' lower in the fron than in the rear as measured from the blade tips. If your tires' pressure has changed a lot recently, your deck is out of level. If the tires are ok, then check the level of the deck to see if it needs adjusting to get back in level, or perhaps it's whacked a tree and needs to be straightened? |
jeff | Hmmm - thanks for the idea, I hadn't thought of that. Unfortunately the tire pressure is good as is the deck level. This problem is quite frustrating as all components seem to be working well, but the overall result is still poor. |
mark | I have one of those Piranah decks on my LX172. I have NEVER been able to mow faster than 2nd gear. Most of the time I have to crawl over my lawn in 1st gear. Otherwise, the poor air circulation under the deck just lays the unmowed grass down flat. Remember, this is a rear-discharge deck, not a side discharge. And, there are two air-restricting baffles under there. I also have to put the blades shaped like propellers under the straight blades and I've had to remove all of the baffles. In the spring, I can't mow at less than a 3.5 inch height, then as spring passes, I can slowly lower the deck height to 2.5 inches. Finally, I sharpen all six blades with a 4-inch angle grinder about once a month until they are razor sharp. Make sure those spindles are greased each month, too. Only after doing all that will it cut well. And, when it cuts well, it cuts very, very well. There are no clippings to be seen and the lawn looks like a smooth carpet (even though the baffles have been removed). I LOVE the rear discharge deck. But, the baffles are too restrictive to air flow and the six blades on a 44 inch deck (insane) are a huge power drain (do you hear that belt squealing when you turn on the PTO?!). When I finally sharpen those blades down to nubs I'm going to replace them with three regular mulching blades. By the way, my LX172 is 15+ years old and still operates like it's new. What a great machine. |
